Shopping for a new mattress doesn’t have to be daunting if you follow these tips and tricks.
1. Shop on a Holiday
When you’re ready to buy, wait for a holiday to see if the mattress you want goes on sale. Many big box retailers and mattress stores hold one-day blowout sales on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and other holidays. Financing with lower interest rates and a longer grace period before payments are due may also be available.
If your mattress doesn’t make the sale, you can always purchase it the next day but waiting could save you hundreds of dollars. These holiday sales can be great times to purchase a high quality memory foam mattress that may run much more at a regular price and know if memory foam is actually safe.
2. Ask about Extras
You can always try to bargain down the price of a mattress, though, you may have more success in asking about freebies than getting a discount. The company may throw in free pillows, mark down the price on the matching box spring or offer a gift card for bedding.
- Check on Delivery
Find out what the company charges for delivery and set up. The cost may be much higher or lower than a competitor you were considering, which can help you decide where to buy if the price of the mattress is comparable. You should also ask if removal of your old mattress is included or if the company would take it for an additional charge.
- Online is an Option
Just because a mattress is big and bulky doesn’t mean you can’t buy one online. It just takes a bit more legwork on your part to ensure that you will be able to sleep on the mattress for several nights, then easily return the bed if you don’t care for it. Make sure that you pay attention to shipping and handling charges. Shipping to you may be free but return shipping could be costly.
You may find a better price online since retailers don’t have to maintain and stock a showroom and employ people to work there.
- Keep the Peace
Regardless of you where you decide to shop, remember that this is just a mattress. The world won’t end if you don’t decide today. Take a break and come back another day if you start feeling overwhelming. You won’t get that refreshing night’s sleep you crave if you rush into a decision about which mattress is best for you.
